Gambling in the Philippines has been current since the sixteenth century, and is still prevalent in the country today. Presently, it takes on different legal and illegal types found nearly throughout the archipelago. The government manages gambling throughout the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) which intends to regulate and operate games of chance, and also to generate government capital, but there are also several other private and public agencies that handles particular kinds of betting. Specifically, casino gaming under PAGCOR is necessary to the nation’s tourism and earnings. The Philippines has more casinos than Macau, with twenty located in Metro Manila alone.
Before the Spanish colonization., gaming is thought to have been within the Philippines. Although there are no exact records when gaming was first practiced in the archipelago, it is possible that some forms were introduced by the Chinese in the late sixteenth century. Due to the proximity of both countries, many local Chinese would go to the Philippines for both business and gain, engaging in different transactions and activities. About Magellan’s voyage to the Philippines, it had been noted in the accounts of Antonio Pigafetta, he had already witnessed bets being placed on cockfights if his ship came at Palawan in 1521.
